Amsterdam & London, 10 February 2025 – Amie Technologies and Blüm Health have been awarded the competitive multi-year Eureka Eurostars grant to develop Pal-PCS, the first AI-enabled predictive solution designed to detect and prevent complications in patients with life-limiting illnesses.
Close to 140 million people worldwide live with life-limiting illnesses, such as advanced cancer, neurodegenerative diseases, late-stage organ failure, chronic respiratory disease, and cardiovascular disease. Most spend the majority of their time at home, relying on family caregivers or community-based providers for support. As their conditions progress, these patients face critical health complications that cause significant suffering and often result in emergency hospitalisations, placing immense emotional and financial strain on families and healthcare systems. Despite these challenges, care remains largely reactive, with clinicians and caregivers often forced to respond to crises as they occur.
Rosina Goldsmith, Palliative Care Clinical Nurse Specialist & Pal-PCS Medical Advisor, underscored the urgency of the issue: “At home, we see complications unfold in real time—pain escalating overnight, infections setting in unnoticed, families making medical decisions under stress.”
Reflecting on the challenges faced by families, Nara Moripen, CEO of Amie Technologies, highlighted: “I know firsthand how isolating it can be to care for a loved one at home. Caregivers are making impossible decisions, usually without proper guidance or real-time support. This gap in care leads to unnecessary suffering, unwanted hospitalisations, and immense stress for both patients and family caregivers.”
The Pal-PCS project, led by Amie Technologies and Blüm Health, aims to transform at-home supportive care by proactively identifying serious complications before they occur. By leveraging patient- and family-reported outcomes (PROs) alongside leading treatment guidelines and best-in-class medical knowledge, the system generates real-time risk assessments. This technology enables earlier intervention by healthcare professionals, improves symptom management, and supports proactive, data-driven decision-making.
Seamlessly integrating with the Pal family-facing app and drawing on a depth of at-home observations previously inaccessible to healthcare teams, Pal-PCS is uniquely positioned to provide clinicians with early visibility into potential complications. By identifying risks—such as infections, organ dysfunction, or respiratory distress—before they escalate, it enables timely action to prevent emergencies and improve patient outcomes.
Dr. Vinnie Nambisan, Palliative Care Consultant & Pal-PCS Medical Advisor, emphasised the value of early detection for clinicians: “We often see patients in the hospital with complications that could have been prevented if we had earlier insight into what was happening at home. Pal-PCS changes that. It alerts us to warning signs earlier, allowing us to take timely action and keep patients out of the hospital whenever possible.”
As the technology partner powering Pal-PCS, Blüm Health is developing the AI-driven predictive engine that will transform real-world patient data into actionable insights.
Michael Watts, CEO of Blüm Health, highlighted the innovation behind the collaboration:
“AI in healthcare is only as good as the real-world data it learns from. By integrating patient- and family-reported insights with expert clinical knowledge, we’re building a predictive model that is not only accurate but also explainable and actionable. Pal-PCS represents a new standard in proactive care for patients with complex needs.”
With the support of the Eureka Eurostars grant, Amie Technologies and Blüm Health are committed to bringing Pal-PCS to market, ensuring that families, caregivers, and healthcare professionals have the tools they need to provide timely, proactive, and effective care for patients with life-limiting illnesses.
