Pal is pleased to present research conducted by The Hague University of Applied Sciences in association with Technologie voor Thuis and the Municipality of The Hague.
Through in-depth interviews with healthcare professionals, the research investigated the foundational framework required for the successful implementation of Pal into the Dutch healthcare system.
The first aim of the research identified potential pathways for Pal to reach patients and caregivers, whilst the second explored key factors for the successful adoption of Pal.
Potential Pathways
Three recommended pathways emerged from the research. First, healthcare professionals working frontline, specifically doctors and nurses at GP practices (Huisartsenpraktijken), are in the best position to guide their patients and caregivers towards Pal. Secondly, umbrella organisations fostering collaboration between healthcare providers, such as Vereniging Transmurale Zorg, are uniquely positioned to introduce Pal to stakeholders. Finally, with municipalities responsible for providing community care under the 2015 Social Support Act (Wet maatschappelijke ondersteuning 2015), municipality-led initiatives present valuable opportunities to raise awareness of Pal at a local level.
Successful Adoption
The research highlighted six critical considerations for the adoption of Pal. It recommended that Pal incorporate information about local palliative care providers in addition to comprehensive resources on end-of-life care, such as medications and funeral planning. Other key insights emphasised that Pal is most effective when introduced while the patient is still undergoing treatment, rather than in the final stage of life. Finally, it highlighted that Pal can assist healthcare providers in forming an overview of a patient’s condition, rather than overemphasising minor discomforts.
Looking Ahead
Pal has already taken steps to implement these recommendations in order to enhance usability for patients and caregivers living in The Hague. By aligning with these research-driven insights, Pal aims to expand its impact beyond The Hague, enhancing palliative care support across the Netherlands.
